Establishing the placental exchange interface. On pages 254–265 Katharina Walentin, Christian Hinze, and Kai M. Schmidt-Ott discuss recent findings regarding the cellular and molecular events that underlie morphogenesis of the chorioallantoic interface. This interface hosts the basal chorionic trophoblast (BCT) cells that initiate development of the labyrinth zone, the component of the placental villous tree where fetomaternal exchange occurs in rodents. The cover presents an immunofluorescent image from a mouse placenta. The tissue is stained for the cytokeratin (green), the transcription factor Tcfap2c (red) and for nuclei (blue.)
