Bovine versus Porcine Acellular Dermal Matrix

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοOtoRhinoLaryngology - Alexandros G. SfakianakisΠριν από 3 δευτερόλεπτα
Bovine versus Porcine Acellular Dermal Matrix: A Comparison of Mechanical Properties: Background: Porcine and bovine acellular dermal matrices (PADM and BADM, respectively) are the most commonly used biologic meshes for ventral hernia repair. A previous study suggests a higher rate of intraoperative device failures using PADM than BADM. We hypothesize that this difference is, in part, related to intrinsic mechanical properties of the matrix substrate and source material. The following study directly compares these 2 matrices to identify any potential differences in mechanical proper... περισσότερα »

Oral administration of erythromycin decreases RNA toxicity

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοOtoRhinoLaryngology - Alexandros G. SfakianakisΠριν από 19 δευτερόλεπτα
Oral administration of erythromycin decreases RNA toxicity in myotonic dystrophy: Abstract Objective Myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) is caused by the expansion of a CTG repeat in the 3′ untranslated region of *DMPK*. The transcripts containing an expanded CUG repeat (CUGexp) result in a toxic gain-of-function by forming ribonuclear foci that sequester the alternative splicing factor muscleblind-like 1 (MBNL1). Although several small molecules reportedly ameliorate RNA toxicity, none are ready for clinical use because of the lack of safety data. Here, we undertook a drug-repositioni...περισσότερα »

For such patients, we report a hybrid technique that allows for a percutaneous injection without paralysis but with sedation to increase patient tolerance. Supraglottic airway laryngotracheal intervention (SALTI) brings the benefits of injection laryngoplasty to a group of patients previously underserved. Methods: In... περισσότερα »

Efficiently detecting outlying behavior in video-game players

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοNews in OtoRhinoLaryngology - Alexandros G. SfakianakisΠριν από 33 δευτερόλεπτα
In this paper, we propose a method for automatically detecting the times during which game players exhibit specific behavior, such as when players commonly show excitement, concentration, immersion, and surprise. The proposed method detects such outlying behavior based on the game players' characteristics. These characteristics are captured non-invasively in a general game environment. In this paper, cameras were used to analyze observed data such as facial expressions and player movements. Moreover, multimodal data from the game players (i.e., data regarding adjustments to the vo... περισσότερα »

Volatile anesthetics suppress glucose-stimulated insulin secretion in MIN6 cells by inhibiting glucose-induced activation of hypoxia-inducible factor 1

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοNews in OtoRhinoLaryngology - Alexandros G. SfakianakisΠριν από 33 δευτερόλεπτα
Proper glycemic control is one of the most important goals in perioperative patient management. Insulin secretion from pancreatic β-cells in response to an increased blood glucose concentration plays the most critical role in glycemic control. Several animal and human studies have indicated that volatile anesthetics impair glucose-stimulated insulin secretion (GSIS). A convincing GSIS model has been established, in which the activity of ATP-dependent potassium channels (KATP) under the control of intracellular ATP plays a critical role. We previously reported that pimonidazole addu... περισσότερα »

Metagenomic and satellite analyses of red snow in the Russian Arctic

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοNews in OtoRhinoLaryngology - Alexandros G. SfakianakisΠριν από 33 δευτερόλεπτα
Cryophilic algae thrive in liquid water within snow and ice in alpine and polar regions worldwide. Blooms of these algae lower albedo (reflection of sunlight), thereby altering melting patterns (Kohshima, Seko & Yoshimura, 1993; Lutz et al., 2014; Thomas & Duval, 1995). Here metagenomic DNA analysis and satellite imaging were used to investigate red snow in Franz Josef Land in the Russian Arctic. Franz Josef Land red snow metagenomes confirmed that the communities are composed of the autotroph Chlamydomonas nivalis that is supporting a complex viral and heterotrophic bacterial com...περισσότερα »

Drug delivery systems for ovarian cancer treatment: a systematic review and meta-analysis of animal studies

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοNews in OtoRhinoLaryngology - Alexandros G. SfakianakisΠριν από 33 δευτερόλεπτα
Current ovarian cancer treatment involves chemotherapy that has serious limitations, such as rapid clearance, unfavorable biodistribution and severe side effects. To overcome these limitations, drug delivery systems (DDS) have been developed to encapsulate chemotherapeutics for delivery to tumor cells. However, no systematic assessment of the efficacy of chemotherapy by DDS compared to free chemotherapy (not in a DDS) has been performed for animal studies. Here, we assess the efficacy of chemotherapy in DDS on survival and tumor growth inhibition in animal studies. We searched Pub...περισσότερα »

Oral administration of erythromycin decreases RNA toxicity in myotonic dystrophy

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοΝευρολογία κ' ΝευροχειρουργικήΠριν από 49 δευτερόλεπτα
Abstract Objective Myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) is caused by the expansion of a CTG repeat in the 3′ untranslated region of *DMPK*. Here, we undertook a drug-repositioning screen to identify a safe and effective small molecule for upcoming clinical t... περισσότερα »

The Rho family GTPase Cdc42 is appreciated as a key moderator of cellular actin dynamics, and the development of specific Cdc42-inhibiting agents has given us an unprecedented ability to investigate its individual role in signalling pathways. However, investigative use of said agents, and the ... περισσότερα »

Risks, Vol. 3, Pages 599-623: Dependence Uncertainty Bounds for the Expectile of a Portfolio

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοNews in OtoRhinoLaryngology - Alexandros G. SfakianakisΠριν από 1 ώρα
We study upper and lower bounds on the expectile risk measure of risky portfolios when the joint distribution of the risky components is not fully specified. First, we summarize methods for obtaining bounds when only the marginal distributions of the components are known, but not their interdependence (unconstrained bounds). In particular, we provide the best-possible upper bound and the best-possible lower bound (under some conditions), as well as numerical procedures to compute them. We also derive simple analytic bounds that appear adequate in various situations of interest. Se...περισσότερα »

Background: Comprehensive multidisciplinary pulmonary rehabilitation is vital in the management of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and is considered for any stage of the disease. Rehabilitation programmes are often centre-based and organised in groups. However, the distance from the patient's home to the centre and lack of transportation may hinder participation. Rehabilitation at home can improve access to care for patients regardless of disease severity. We had previously studied the technology usability and acceptability of a comprehensive home rehabilitation progr... περισσότερα »

Abstract Introduction Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most dominant neurodegenerative disorder that causes dementia, and no effective treatments are available. To study its pathogenesis and develop therapeutics, animal models representing its pathologies are needed. Although many animal species develop senile plaques (SP) composed of amyloid-β (Aβ) proteins that are identical to those found in humans, none of them exhibit neurofibrillary tangles (NFT) and subsequent neurodegeneration, which are integral parts of the pathology of AD. Results The present study shows that Aβ accumul...περισσότερα »

Some studies have investigated air quality improvement by near-road vegetation barrier using the dispersion-related method while few studies have done the same using the deposition-related method. However, decision making on vegetation barrier's configuration and placement for need-based maximum benefit ... περισσότερα »

Attempts to improve nitrogen utilization efficiency of aquaponics through nitrifies addition and filler gradation

Abstract Exposure to elevated levels of ambient air pollutants can lead to adverse cardiovascular effects. Perturbation of the coagulation balance is one of the potential mechanisms. However, evidence regarding the impact of improvement in air pollution on blood coagulability in COPD patients has never been reported. Coagulation processes are known to be of relevance for cardiovascular pathology; therefore, this study aimed to investigate the association of short-term air pollution exposure with blood marker (D-dimer) of coagulation. A 3-year (through the Asian game) cohort study ... περισσότερα »

Microdeletions of the 7q32.2 imprinted region are associated with Silver–Russell syndrome features

The association of maternal uniparental disomy of human chromosome 7 (upd(7) mat) and the growth retardation disorder Silver–Russell syndrome (SRS) is well established, but the causative gene or region is currently unknown. However, several observations indicate that molecular alterations of the genomically imprinted *MEST* region in 7q32.2 are associated with growth retardation and a phenotype reminiscent to SRS. We now report on a second patient with a similar phenotype and a de novo 7q32.2 microdeletion including *MEST* affecting the paternal allele. This confirms the central ... περισσότερα »

IGF-binding protein 2 is a candidate target of therapeutic potential in cancer

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοΟγκολογίαΠριν από 4 ώρες
Abstract Insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-binding protein 2(IGFBP2), a key member of IGF family, has been reported as a notable oncogene in most human epithelium cancers. Increasing evidences suggested that IGFBP2 might be a candidate target of therapuetic potential by regulating key cancer metastasis and invasion-associated signaling networks, but there is still confusion about the mechanism on how IGFBP2 takes part in these processes. In this review, we summarized the current points of view that IGFBP2 functions in signaling pathways during tumorigenesis and tumor progression an...περισσότερα »

Disruption of in vivo chronic lymphocytic leukemia tumor-microenvironment interactions by ibrutinib - findings from an investigator initiated phase 2 study

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοΟγκολογίαΠριν από 4 ώρες
Purpose: Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) cells depend on microenvironmental interactions for proliferation and survival that are at least partially mediated through B cell receptor (BCR) signaling. Ibrutinib, a Bruton's tyrosine kinase inhibitor, disrupts BCR signaling and leads to the egress of tumor cells from the microenvironment. While the on-target effects on CLL cells are well defined, the impact on the microenvironment is less well studied. We therefore sought to characterize the in vivo effects of ibrutinib on the tumor microenvironment. Experimental Design: Patients re... περισσότερα »

Small molecule inhibitors of the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K), Akt and mTOR pathway currently in the clinic produce a paradoxical reactivation of the pathway they are intended to suppress. Furthermore, fresh experimental evidence with PI3K antagonists in melanoma, glioblastoma and prostate cancer shows that mitochondrial metabolism drives an elaborate process of tumor adaptation culminating with drug resistance and metastatic competency. This is centered on reprogramming of mitochondrial functions to promote improved cell survival and to fuel the machinery of cell motility ...περισσότερα »

Abstract Purpose Chemotherapy with platinum compounds and gemcitabine is frequently used in first-line treatment of advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients in which tyrosine kinase inhibitors (EGFR or ALK) cannot be administered. Unfortunately, less than half of the patients achieve the benefit from chemotherapy. Gemcitabine is an analog of deoxycytidine (pyrimidine antimetabolite) with antitumor activity. The excess of deoxycytidine synthesized by RRM1 enzyme activity may be a cause of competitive displacement of gemcitabine, which reduces the efficacy of this cytost...περισσότερα »

Impact of methionine on a partial-nitritation biofilter

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοΑισθητική ΔερματολογίαΠριν από 6 ώρες
Abstract It has been demonstrated that an anaerobic digestion process cannot attain an efficient removal of several amino acids, with methionine being one of the most persistent of these. Thus, the effect that methionine amino acid has over the partial-nitritation process with fixed-biofilm configuration in terms of performance and bacterial community dynamics has been investigated. With respect to the performance with no addition, 100 mg/L methionine loading decreased ammonium oxidation efficiency in 60 % and 100 % at concentrations of 300 and 500 mg/L methionine, respectively. Effects of spatiotemporal variation of soil salinity on fine root distribution in different plant configuration modes in new reclamation coastal saline field

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοΑισθητική ΔερματολογίαΠριν από 6 ώρες
Abstract In order to study the effects of salinity on plant fine roots, we considered three different plant configuration modes (tree stand model (TSM), shrub stand model (SSM), and tree–shrub stand model (TSSM)). Soil samples were collected with the method of soil drilling. Significant differences of electrical conductivity (EC) in the soil depth of 0–60 cm were observed among the three modes (*p* < 0.05). In the above three modes, the variation of soil salinity among various soil layers and monthly variation of soil salinity were the highest in SSM and reached 2.30 and 2.23 mS/c... περισσότερα »

Is the Fgap1 mediated response to oxidative stress chemotype-dependent in Fusarium graminearum?

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοΛοίμωξηΠριν από 6 ώρες
This study aims to compare the role of the transcription factor *Fgap1* in oxidative stress response for two *Fusarium graminearum* strains belonging to the two chemotypes DON/ADON and NIV/FX. While the response to H2O2 was shown to be chemotype dependent, an opposite result was observed for diamide: whatever the chemotype, the global level of TCTB (i.e. trichothecene B) production was strongly increased by the treatment with diamide. *Fgap1* was shown to be involved in this regulation for both chemotypes. Our data show that the response to diamide is mediated by *Fgap1* whatever ...περισσότερα »

The epi-TAF for TDF?

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοΛοίμωξηΠριν από 6 ώρες
Approximately 84% of HIV-infected US residents on antiretroviral therapy currently receive some form of tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) as part of their HIV treatment regimen. The TDF analog – tenofovir alafenamide fumarate (TAF) – has demonstrated equal efficacy but with decreased renal injury and bone mineral density loss, compared to TDF. We examine how much more society ought to be willing to pay for TAF over TDF, in exchange for its improved toxicity profile. Using cost-effectiveness methods, we find that current conditions warrant an annual premium of up to $1,010 over th... περισσότερα »
