Speech Recognition of Cochlear Implant Users Inside a Noisy Helicopter Environment
In this study, we tested whether the speech recognition, through radio communications, of cochlear implant (CI) users inside a noisy helicopter cockpit is adequate for safe flight. Method: Speech recognition tests (sentences, numbers and disyllables) through a very-high-frequency radio were administered to 12 CI users in a soundproof booth, inside a helicopter with the engine turned off and turned on. Results: In quiet environments, radio communications were impacted only for disyllable intelligibility,...

MedRx Celebrates 25 Years in Business
Innovation, research, continuity, reliability: these are the keys to MedRx's success over the last 25 years. MedRx, Largo, Florida, was established in 1994 by Ron Buck. In 1994, Ron had worked in Florida for more than 10 years as a hearing aid dispenser. As a practice owner, he decided he needed a video otoscope but found the market solutions were too costly. Instead of giving in to the market, Ron decided to develop a video otoscope for his offices. Ron pulled an engineering friend out of retirement...

Exploring the Roles of Central and Peripheral Nervous System Function in Gait Stability: Preliminary Insights from Cancer Survivors
Publication date: Available online 6 April 2019Source: Gait & PostureAuthor(s): Scott M. Monfort, Xueliang Pan, Charles L. Loprinzi, Maryam B. Lustberg, Ajit M.W. ChaudhariAbstractBackgroundImpairments in central and/or peripheral nervous systems are known to be associated with altered gait; however, the interplay between cognitive function, peripheral sensation, and orbital gait stability remains largely unclear. Elucidating these relationships is expected to provide a clearer understanding...

Differences in Temporal Gait Mechanics are Associated with Decreased Perceived Ankle Joint Health in Individuals with Chronic Ankle Instability
Publication date: Available online 5 April 2019Source: Gait & PostureAuthor(s): Kyle B. Kosik, Masafumi Terada, Ryan McCann, Abbey Thomas, Nathan Johnson, Phillip GribbleAbstractBackgroundChronic ankle instability (CAI) is associated with an increased risk of developing post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA). Altered temporal gait parameters likely contribute to the early development and progression of PTOA in CAI. However, it is unknown if increased clinical symptoms of ankle PTOA influence temporal...

Beyond Speed: Gait changes after Botulinum Toxin injections in Chronic Stroke Survivors (A Systematic Review)
Publication date: Available online 4 April 2019Source: Gait & PostureAuthor(s): L. Eduardo Cofré Lizama, Fary Khan, Mary P. GaleaABSTRACTBackgroundThe mechanisms by which spasticity reductions after botulinum toxin A (BoNT) affect gait in stroke are not well understood. We systematically reviewed the effects of BoNT on spatiotemporal, kinematic, kinetic and electromyographic (EMG) measures during gait.QuestionWhat are the effects of botulinum toxin on gait mechanics in stroke patients?MethodsSystematic...
