Nursery school as an environmental factor for body mass index

In an article by Jabakhanji et al,1 the authors reported on longitudinal changes in body mass index (BMI) that spanned the first 5 years of life and associated risk factors in young children in Ireland. The authors found that differences in birth size and rapid weight gain in infancy are most strongly associated with BMI at all ages; however, other factors, such as ethnicity, caregiver weight status, breast feeding, sex, sleep, and socioeconomic status, were also shown to have small independent effects on weight status.
