Too many captains

The history of a Victorian hospital does not often set the blood racing—few people even seem to know which Queen gave her title to the square. But all the same, it helps to have a royal connection. A few years ago there was not a citizen of Bloomsbury who did not know that every weekend a bed in the surgical ward of the National Hospital was reserved in case Prince Charles had a fall from his horse playing polo. The late Princess Diana was a Royal Patron and whatever faults she may have had, she was the best-loved visitor a hospital ever knew. To the patients, a few minutes with her was worth any number of consultant hours.
