Increasing donor liver utilization through machine perfusion

Abstract

Recently in Nature, Nasralla et al reported the remarkable results of a trial randomizing 270 provisionally accepted donor livers to either static cold storage (SCS) or normothermic machine perfusion (NMP) (1). There have been case series suggesting that both cold and warm perfusion, immediately after procurement and end‐ischemic, have similar or better outcomes compared to retrospectively matched SCS livers, but this study is notable for being the first randomized control trial (RCT) and for collecting organ utilization data.
