Colorectal cancer screening can reduce the incidence and mortality of colorectal cancer, but interval cancers can occur after a negative screening test. Studies repeatedly show that interval cancer rates are higher in the proximal than in the distal colon but it is not known whether this is due to a higher miss rate of proximal lesions, different polypectomy success rates, or because of different biology of proximal neoplasms.
