Midlife crisis? In its 50th year, BPD redefines itself

In 2017, bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) marked its 50th year as a descriptor of lung disease following premature delivery. The NICU has changed in the years since 1967, as have the babies that leave the NICU with the diagnosis of BPD. Because of that, BPD itself has changed. It is thus necessary to return to the definition, and react to these changes in order to arm our clinicians and researchers with the best possible measure and predictor of lung injury and function following premature birth.
