Responsive Materials: 3D Printing of Living Responsive Materials and Devices (Adv. Mater. 4/2018)

A new 3D-printing method integrates genetically programmed bacterial cells into large-scale, high-resolution living materials and devices, as demonstrated by Xuanhe Zhao and co-workers in article number 1704821. In the 3D-printed active structure, genetically engineered cells and some signaling chemicals act as responsive components and can communicate and process signals in a programmable manner.
