Neurobehavioral phenotypes in preterm children

Although it is well known that preterm infants are at risk for developmental difficulties, less attention has been given to specific profiles of development that may occur. In this volume of The Journal, Johnson et al explored patterns of development in moderate and late preterm infants compared with full-term infants at 2 years of corrected age. Most of the children were developing normally, with a low risk for difficulties in any domain. In full-term children and preterm children, the most common "non-optimal phenotype" consisted of problems clustered in the social-emotional and behavioral domains with a low risk of cognitive impairment or language delay.
