N2 reduction to NH3 is essential to the chemical industry and to the Earth's nitrogen cycle. In article number 1703828, Tierui Zhang and co-workers report that layered-double-hydroxide nanosheets with severe distortion and compressive strain possess remarkable photocatalytic activity for the photoreduction of N2 to NH3 in water under visible light. The work develops an alternative to the Haber–Bosch process that requires H2 as a co-substrate, as well as high-temperature and high-pressure reaction conditions.
