Photocatalysts: Layered-Double-Hydroxide Nanosheets as Efficient Visible-Light-Driven Photocatalysts for Dinitrogen Fixation (Adv. Mater. 42/2017)

N₂ reduction to NH₃ is essential to the chemical industry and to the Earth's nitrogen cycle. In article number 1703828, Tierui Zhang and co-workers report that layered-double-hydroxide nanosheets with severe distortion and compressive strain possess remarkable photocatalytic activity for the photoreduction of N₂ to NH₃ in water under visible light. The work develops an alternative to the Haber–Bosch process that requires H₂ as a co-substrate, as well as high-temperature and high-pressure reaction conditions.
