Steps Toward Sustainable Change in Advance Care Planning

As part of an annual communication training at the University of Pittsburgh, we ask nephrology fellows to reflect on when they last felt like a healer. Rather than recounting complex diagnoses or therapeutic successes, their stories describe caring for and connecting with patients at times of vulnerability. In essence, these fellows felt like better clinicians when they helped patients and families near the end of life.
