Treating to Target in Older Hypertensive Patients: Where Is the Bull’s Eye?

Hypertension is an important risk factor for the development and progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD).1 The prevalence of hypertension increases with age, affecting 65% of US adults 60 years or older.2 Isolated systolic hypertension is the most common subtype in this age group. Hypertension is also an important risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD), the most common cause of death in persons with CKD.3 In adults older than 50 years, systolic blood pressure (SBP) is a better predictor of CVD than diastolic blood pressure (BP).
