How Do We Regard the Preemie at the Margins of Viability?

Pediatric medicine has historically addressed people at the margins. One hundred years ago, focusing the attention of medicine on the health and well-being of children was a dramatically new idea, occurring in the context of great social, cultural, and political change. Although the first hospital for children opened in Paris in 1802 (Hôpital des Enfants Malades), it was not until the late 19th century that the well-being of children gained acknowledgement in the courts and by nongovernmental child protection societies.
