Editorial

The preprint server bioRxiv recently received a funding boost from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative to make content more readable on various platforms and amenable to text mining. At the time of writing bioRxiv has posted approximately 11 000 papers. The arrival of open access preprint servers such as bioRxiv, could, at first sight, be considered a threat to subscription-based journals such as Brain. In fact, only a small minority of biomedical journals, including The New England Journal of Medicine, The Journal of Clinical Investigation, and Neurology, exclude from consideration manuscripts that have previously been posted on preprint servers. To submit an article to Brain, or to another journal published by Oxford University Press, it is only necessary that a posted preprint, denoted the Author's Original Version, should acknowledge in due course that the article has been accepted for publication in the journal, with the volume and issue number, the DOI, and a link to the journal's website. The version posted on the preprint server must not, however, be updated after it has been submitted to Brain.
