The importance of family presence, and how to make it happen

The benefits of family engagement during a child's hospitalization are well known, and not only for the psychosocial benefits of family-centered care. When families are present and able to talk to physicians and nurses they are much more likely to understand the trajectory of illness: (1) to express goals, values, and opinions; (2) to be fully participative during informed consent discussions; and (3) to possibly mitigate some of the stress of a hospital stay. Moreover, there may be financial benefits in more timely family education and preparation for discharge.
