Corticosteroids for children with parapneumonic effusion

Data on corticosteroid effectiveness in children hospitalized with complicated pneumonia is lacking. In this volume of The Journal, Tagarro et al report findings from a randomized controlled trial of 60 children hospitalized at 8 centers in Spain with a parapneumonic effusion. Children were randomized to either dexamethasone or placebo given every 6 hours for 2 days in addition to antibiotic therapy. The investigators found that children receiving dexamethasone had a shorter time to recovery (median of 2.8 days shorter).
