Metastatic cardiac tumor from urothelial carcinoma detected by transthoracic echocardiography: a case report
[image: s13256-015-0740-3-1.gif] IntroductionCardiac metastasis of urothelial carcinoma is a very rare but clinically important complication. Most cardiac metastases are asymptomatic; symptoms from cardiac metastasis were seen in advanced stage and many of these cases were reported to have a poor prognosis. So it is important to find asymptomatic cardiac metastasis and to start chemotherapy early in order to improve the patient's prognosis.Case presentationA 73-year-old Asian man was referred to our hospital because of a right ventricular tumor. Therapeutic Challenges to End-Stage Kidney Disease in a Patient with Tetralogy of Fallot
In this report, we describe the case of an end-stage kidney disease patient with tetralogy of Fallot (TOF). A 33-year-old female with TOF was admitted to our hospital with complaints of general fatigue and appetite loss probably due to uremic milieu. She was ultimately treated with peritoneal dialysis (PD) with a favorable clinical course. TOF patients with chronic kidney disease are not exceptional, although the currently available information regarding the association between TOF and renal failure severe enough to require dialysis treatment is limited. We also discuss the comple... περισσότερα »

Protection of Health Imagery by Region Based Lossless Reversible Watermarking Scheme
Providing authentication and integrity in medical images is a problem and this work proposes a new blind fragile region based lossless reversible watermarking technique to improve trustworthiness of medical images. The proposed technique embeds the watermark using a reversible least significant bit embedding scheme. The scheme combines hashing, compression, and digital signature techniques to create a content dependent watermark making use of compressed region of interest (ROI) for recovery of ROI as reported in literature. The experiments were carried out to prove the performance...περισσότερα »

Plasma Nitration of High-Density and Low-Density Lipoproteins in Chronic Kidney Disease Patients Receiving Kidney Transplants
Background. Functional abnormalities of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) could contribute to cardiovascular disease in chronic kidney disease patients. We measured a validated marker of HDL dysfunction, nitrated apolipoprotein A-I, in kidney transplant recipients to test the hypothesis that a functioning kidney transplant reduces serum nitrated apoA-I concentrations. Methods. Concentrations of nitrated apoA-I and apoB were measured using indirect sandwich ELISA assays on sera collected from each transplant subject before transplantation and at 1, 3, and 12 months after transplantati... περισσότερα »

The associations between Parkinson’s disease and cancer
The associations between Parkinson’s disease and cancer: the plot thickens: AbstractEpidemiological studies support a general inverse association between the risk of cancer development and Parkinson’s disease (PD). In recent years however, increasing amount of eclectic evidence points to a positive association between PD and cancers through different temporal analyses and ethnic groups. This positive association has been supported by several common genetic mutations in *SNCA*, *PARK2*, *PARK8*, *ATM*, *p53*, *PTEN*, and *MC1R* resulting in cellular changes such as mitochondrial dys...περισσότερα »

Applied anatomy of the anterior cranial fossa: what can fracture patterns tell us?
Applied anatomy of the anterior cranial fossa: what can fracture patterns tell us?: The skull base is uniquely placed to absorb anteriorly directed forces imparted either via the midfacial skeleton or cranial vault. A variety of skull base fracture classifications exist. Less well understood, however, is fracture extension beyond the anterior cranial fossa (ACF) into the middle and posterior cranial fossae. The cases of 81 patients from two UK major trauma centres were studied to examine the distribution of fractures across the skull base and any relationship between the vector of f... περισσότερα »

Vocational Education at the Intersection of Workplace and School
When Expectations Clash: Vocational Education at the Intersection of Workplace and School: AbstractNext to highly regarded varieties of apprenticeship-based vocational education there are, in many countries, forms of mainly school-based VET (vocational education and training) that suffer from a clash of expectations between schools and workplaces as sites of vocational education. School-based VET is viewed as of lesser value compared to work experience or workplace based training and one reason for such negative views on mainly school-based VET is the lack of authentic work-related...περισσότερα »
